Chadian authorities have announced the unconditional release of 14 people held hostage in the Tourkou area of the Tibesti region following three days of captivity.
The individuals were released on the evening of October 8 after negotiations involving a senior government delegation and traditional community leaders.
Officials confirmed that all 14 people were in good health and had been presented to administrative, traditional and military authorities.
Senior government delegation leads negotiations
The mediation efforts were led by Deputy Prime Minister Limane Mahamat, who is responsible for territorial administration and decentralization.
The delegation included Public Security and Immigration Minister Ali Ahmat Aghabach, parliamentarians, presidential and prime ministerial advisers, and local officials.
Sultan Sidick Timan Déby of Dar Bilia and a representative of the traditional Toubou leadership also participated in the process.
According to the authorities, the involvement of community leaders played a significant role in securing the release of individuals held by both sides.
Investigation into killing continues
The tensions followed the shooting death of mining entrepreneur Tahir Souleymane Arim in Tourkou. Two other people were reportedly injured in the attack.
Subsequent disputes between the communities led to incidents of mutual detention.
The government said security operations were continuing to locate the suspected killer and possible accomplices.
Government calls for peaceful coexistence
Deputy Prime Minister Limane Mahamat welcomed the outcome of the negotiations and emphasized the government's determination to preserve peace and state authority.
He said the release represented an important step toward resolving the immediate crisis.
Authorities also announced that discussions with traditional leaders would continue to address outstanding civilian disputes between the communities and support peaceful coexistence in Tibesti.
