Eritrea commemorated World Teachers’ Day on October 5, 2026, with a national event in Asmara under a theme calling for stronger support and professional capacity for teachers. Education officials and representatives of the teaching profession attended the gathering.

Basic education emphasized

Petros Hailemariam, director-general of research and human resources development at the Ministry of Education, said the government viewed basic education as a right and responsibility of every citizen. He outlined the importance of investment from pre-primary education onward and public support for educators.

Teachers’ association sets priorities

Simon Mehari, chairman of the National Teachers’ Association of Eritrea, said the association aims to improve teaching and learning by strengthening teachers’ professional capacity. He stressed the central role of teachers in achieving quality education.

Continued development encouraged

Speakers highlighted the need for sustained training, cooperation and community involvement in education. The event focused on the responsibilities and professional development of teachers rather than announcing a specific new funding package or student-support distribution. The discussions reflected an ongoing effort to improve educational quality across the country.
