The UN Support Mission in Libya said it followed House of Representatives sessions held in Benghazi on October 5 and 6. It took note of Al-Saleheen Abdelnabi’s election as speaker.
Political roadmap remains the focus
UNSMIL pledged continued engagement with the new leadership and lawmakers. It said work would focus on unifying state institutions, implementing urgent reforms and advancing the political roadmap toward elections.
Election of the new speaker
UNSMIL said it had been informed that at least 102 lawmakers attended the October 5 session and at least 111 attended the October 6 session. The mission took note of the election of Al Saleheen Abdulnabi as speaker.
UN-supported electoral roadmap
The mission pledged to engage with the new leadership on unifying institutions and advancing elections under the political roadmap. Sustained consensus and timely reforms remain crucial to Libya’s political transition.
Broader context
Libya’s prolonged institutional divisions have complicated efforts to organize nationwide elections. Amendments to parliamentary procedures and the selection of new leadership are significant political steps, but they do not in themselves resolve the broader national disagreement. The UN mission has stated its intention to work with the new parliamentary team while supporting institutional unification and a workable electoral timetable.
