Sudan's Transitional Sovereignty Council Chairman and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, has attended an honorary doctorate programme at the Russian State University for the Humanities (RSUH/RGGU) in Moscow.
The visit, scheduled for October 30, 2026, followed his participation in the third Russia–Africa Summit, held in the Russian capital on October 28–29.
Sudan's Ambassador to Russia, Mohamed al-Ghazali al-Tijani Siraj, had previously announced the university visit as part of the Sudanese leader's official programme in Moscow.
The university linked the honorary academic distinction to contributions toward strengthening scientific and cultural cooperation between Sudan and Russia.
Honorary doctorate ceremony in Moscow
Al-Burhan's visit to the Russian State University for the Humanities formed an important academic part of his programme in Moscow.
Sudanese officials, Russian representatives and members of the academic community attended the university event.
Photographs from the programme showed Sudanese and Russian flags displayed in the auditorium, alongside a bilingual Russian-Arabic screen welcoming the Sudanese leader.
Ambassador Mohamed al-Ghazali had previously confirmed that a university visit was included in Al-Burhan's Moscow itinerary.
The university prepared the programme for the ceremonial presentation of the honorary doctorate diploma and related academic insignia.
University approved the distinction in October 2025
The decision to award the honorary doctorate was taken approximately one year before Al-Burhan's latest visit to Moscow.
On October 6, 2025, the Academic Council of the Russian State University for the Humanities unanimously approved the title of Doctor Honoris Causa for Abdel Fattah al-Burhan.
The university explained that the distinction recognized his contribution to the development of Russian–Sudanese cultural and scientific relations.
The 2026 Moscow event therefore formed part of the ceremonial presentation of an honorary title that had already been approved.
An honorary doctorate is an academic distinction awarded by a university in recognition of contributions it considers significant, rather than a degree earned through a conventional doctoral research programme.
Sudanese civilization research strengthens academic ties
The Russian State University for the Humanities has maintained a distinctive academic relationship with Sudan.
The university operates an international educational and research centre dedicated to the study of Sudanese civilization.
Its activities focus on Sudan's historical heritage, archaeological research and the exchange of scientific knowledge.
Eleonora Kormysheva, who heads the university's Sudanese Civilization Research Centre, highlighted these activities when the honorary doctorate decision was announced in 2025.
According to Kormysheva, Russian scholars had participated in three archaeological missions in Sudan, while the university had also concluded an academic cooperation agreement with the University of Khartoum.
These initiatives provide an important academic context for the university's decision to recognize Al-Burhan.
Sudanese Embassy and university prepared the visit
Ahead of the ceremony, representatives of Sudan's Embassy in Moscow held discussions with the university administration.
Vera Zabotkina, the university's Acting Vice-Rector for International Cooperation, emphasized the importance of Sudan within the institution's wider scientific engagement with African countries.
The meeting addressed preparations for Al-Burhan's visit and the ceremonial presentation of the honorary doctorate diploma and academic insignia.
Those involved included Ambassador Mohamed al-Ghazali al-Tijani Siraj, Eleonora Kormysheva and representatives of the university's international cooperation department.
The discussions also covered opportunities to strengthen academic contacts, cultural exchanges and joint research activities.
Visit follows the third Russia–Africa Summit
Al-Burhan's university programme took place following the third Russia–Africa Summit in Moscow on October 28–29.
The Sudanese leader headed his country's high-level delegation to the gathering.
In his summit address, Al-Burhan highlighted the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Sudan and Russia and called for closer strategic cooperation.
He thanked Russian President Vladimir Putin for Moscow's diplomatic support for Sudan's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Al-Burhan also emphasized that peace in Sudan should be achieved without foreign dictates and through a political dialogue led by Sudanese stakeholders.
Education and culture remain areas of bilateral cooperation
Sudan and Russia are marking 70 years of diplomatic relations in 2026.
Alongside political and economic cooperation, the two countries maintain links in scientific research, cultural exchange and higher education.
Al-Burhan's university visit highlighted a dimension of bilateral engagement extending beyond military and diplomatic affairs.
The university's research into Sudanese civilization represents a concrete example of existing academic cooperation.
However, no independently verified announcement has established that the event resulted in a new university agreement, scholarship programme or research funding commitment.
Academic dimension of Moscow visit
Al-Burhan's programme at the Russian State University for the Humanities placed scientific and cultural relations alongside the wider diplomatic discussions held in Moscow.
The honorary doctorate approved in 2025 and the ceremonial presentation programme in 2026 reflect the symbolic importance the university attaches to relations with Sudan.
Research into Sudanese civilization, archaeological expeditions and cooperation between higher education institutions remain established components of the relationship.
Taking place during the 70th anniversary year of Sudanese–Russian diplomatic ties, the visit highlighted continuing efforts to maintain academic and cultural engagement alongside high-level political cooperation.
