Sudan is seeking to strengthen international academic partnerships as part of wider efforts to rebuild and modernize its higher education and scientific research sector.

Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Professor Ahmed Madoui Mousa met senior officials from Tottori University during his visit to Japan for the STS Forum 2026 in Kyoto.

The discussions were attended by Tariq Mohamed Nour, Director-General of Foreign Relations and International Cooperation at Sudan's Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.

Expanding existing academic partnerships

The meeting reviewed cooperation between the University of Khartoum and Tottori University under their existing academic and research agreement.

Both institutions have previously implemented joint research projects, particularly in agriculture.

Officials discussed expanding the partnership into medicine, veterinary science and engineering to support research activities and strengthen institutional capacities.

New opportunities for Sudanese researchers

The two sides also explored additional training, professional development and doctoral study opportunities for Sudanese researchers and university faculty members.

Tottori University expressed its readiness to continue supporting joint academic projects and researcher training.

The discussions also resulted in plans for the University of Khartoum's leadership and several faculty deans to visit Tottori University for further consultations on future projects.

Minister Mousa emphasized the importance of moving beyond academic agreements toward practical projects that contribute to skills development, scientific progress and Sudan's broader reconstruction efforts.
