Sudan’s Finance and Economic Planning Minister Gibril Ibrahim chaired a government economic-sector meeting on October 6, setting out plans to deepen cooperation with Saudi Arabia. Officials discussed moving bilateral economic relations toward a strategic partnership based on viable projects and investment.

Priority investment sectors

Agriculture, livestock, energy, mining, infrastructure and transport were identified as leading areas for potential cooperation. Discussions also covered production and processing chains and ways to improve export opportunities. Sudanese officials said future partnerships should draw on the country’s resources and comparative economic strengths.

Banking coordination discussed

The meeting considered closer coordination between the two countries’ central banks as a way to facilitate commercial and investment transactions. No new agreement between the central banks was announced during the meeting.

Economic recovery remains central

The initiative comes as Sudan looks for investment to support economic recovery and reconstruction after the damage caused by years of fighting. Ibrahim called for sustainable partnerships involving both public and private sectors. The discussions outlined objectives for future cooperation rather than the completion of a specific new investment contract.
